BREAKING: Court sacks Senator Akpan Bassey, orders refund of salaries received

A Federal High Court sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to immediately, withdraw the Certificate of Return given to the Senator representing Akwa-Ibom North East district, Albert Bassey Akpan.

In a judgment delivered on Monday, the court asked INEC to issue a fresh Certificate of Return to Hon. Bassey Etim, whom the court established, as the authentic candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the December 2014 primary election.

The judge equally directed Senator Bassey Albert, to vacate his seat and ordered the President of the Senate, to swear in Bassey Etim, as the Senator for Uyo Senatorial district.

It could be recalled that, Hon. Etim, a former member of the House of Representatives, dragged Senator Akpan, the PDP and INEC before the Federal High Court, Uyo, challenging the nomination of the Senator, even though it was glaring that he convincingly won the party’s primaries.

Consequently, the court faulted the primary that produced Senator Akpan as flag bearer of the PDP and the subsequent election that made him Senator.

The court also made a definite order in the pre-election matter, by directing Senator Akpan to refund all salaries and entitlements collected so far as a Senator representing the constituency.

Factions Around President Buhari Jostle For Control Of His Medical Story, Spin Different Stories

President Muhammadu Buhari, who has been in the UK since January 19, is receiving “intense treatment” for a renewed flare-up of prostate issues. He had undergone surgical treatment for prostate cancer soon after losing the 2011 presidential election to former President Goodluck Jonathan.

In addition to his UK doctors, President Buhari has been under the care of two Nigerian physicians, Dr. Suhayb Sanusi Rafindadi, who is his Chief Personal Physician, and Dr. Ugorji Ogbonna, who had a medical practice for many years in Kano before relocating to the UK. Even though he is from the southeast of Nigeria, Dr. Ogbonna is very close to numerous powerful northern politicians, and one of his sons converted to Islam, according to a source. While Dr. Rafindadi accompanied the president on his medical trips abroad and Dr. Ogbonna often liaise with Mr. Buhari’s physicians in the UK to arrange for his treatments.

Our sources indicated that Mr. Buhari’s original surgical treatment for prostate cancer had been declared successful. However, when a nagging ear infection forced President Buhari to visit his longtime physician in the UK last year, the prognosis led the president to seek two separate medical opinions, in France and later Germany. Doctors in both countries reportedly told him it was urgent to see his doctors in the UK. Subsequently, Mr. Buhari, who was visiting France for a conference, moved from Paris to London, declaring that he needed a vacation.

Mr. Buhari’s UK doctors advised that he needed to stay put in London for another surgery, but the president bowed to pressure from members of his inner circle and decided to make a premature return to Abuja out of political expediency. However, before President Buhari left London, his doctors there removed polyps from his nostrils in a surgical procedure to ease his breathing.

In 2016, President Buhari made trips to the UK in February and June to consult his UK doctors on a variety of health issues, including his ear infection, said our sources.

We learned that President Buhari currently receives intense treatment for a prostate-related ailment. The treatment at a point severely affected his voice and appetite. He has progressively lost weight and has had to be force-fed on occasion on the orders of his doctors. One source said Mr. Buhari’s treatments had been compounded by his age, which his UK doctors believe to be more than 80 rather than his official “age” of 74 years old.

Information gleaned from our sources indicated an attempt to obfuscate the precise nature of Mr. Buhari’s illness, signaling efforts by competing factions around the president to keep the Nigerian public uninformed. According to our sources, four different versions of President Buhari's condition were being circulated. One version, traced to his wife, Aisha Buhari, is that the president has “internal organ” issues.

Our sources disclosed that a cabal led by President Buhari's cousin, Mamman Daura, reportedly sent Mrs. Aisha Buhari away from the UK, asking her to make a temporary visit to Saudi Arabia. To justify Aisha Buhari’s exit from London, Mr. Daura reportedly claimed that the president’s condition appeared to worsen each time his wife was around him. He reportedly told Mrs. Buhari that part of her husband's illness was a result of “a spiritual attack,” and asked her to proceed to Saudi Arabia to pray for him. From Saudi Arabia, Mrs. Buhari returned to Nigeria about two weeks ago. One source claimed that she had not returned to London ever since.

Our sources said Mr. Daura often handled the daily briefing of select Presidency officials about the president's health. According to them, the president’s cousin continues to claim that Mr. Buhari was only exhausted and needed adequate rest before returning to Nigeria ready to take over the mantle of leadership once again.

Two close aides claimed that President Buhari was dogged by “severe stomach upsets” that have refused to go away. One of them said Mr. Buhari suffered from a recurring bacteria infection “that is being flushed out daily.”

As  revealed last weekend, the doctors treating Mr. Buhari in the UK have told him in clear terms that he ought to shelf any plans to return to serious work and stay back in London for as long as four months to receive a full course of treatment. One source indicated that members of the president’s inner circle were yet to fully embrace the doctors’ recommendation and communicate the information to Nigerians because they fear the loss of political influence.

On his part, President Buhari had reportedly told his inner political circle that he was in no hurry to return to Nigeria, adding that he was willing to let the expert advice of his doctors to prevail. However, some of his die-hard associates have not given up plotting to daily to convince him to return to Abuja in defiance of medical advice.

President Buhari reportedly communicates regularly with Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, encouraging him to carry on the task of governing Nigeria while he undertakes necessary treatment needed to keep him alive.

Reverend Lizzy Suleman Gets Multimillion School Gift From Husband And Donates Cash, 3 Posh Cars

It's the celebration today, Sunday, February 26th, 2017, of the birthday of Reverend (Dr.) Lizzy Suleman, wife of the president of Omega Fire Ministries Int'l, Apostle Johnson Suleman.

Because she is not just a dutiful and caring wife and mother in the home but also a good role model to women and youths for her exemplary leadership qualities, the people are standing up to celebrate her.

The birthday which originally comes up on every 28th of February, is being made a very special one by her husband who lived up to his promise of presenting her a 'shocking' birthday gift. Indeed, Apostle Suleman shocked everyone when he announced a multimillion naira school as his surprise birthday present for her beautiful wife who was all brimming with delight:

The Edo State deputy governor, Mr. Phillip Shaibu, on behalf of the government, gladly commissioned the school amidst loud applause and praises for both the husband and celebrant.

Speaking on the celebrant, Apostle Suleman said that nothing is too much to reward the celebrant who he said possesses all the characteristics of a virtuous woman. "I'm gifting this as a legacy to celebrate her because she represents all that a good man needs in a good wife. She is an embodiment of virtue, she is beautiful because she practises the lifestyle of a virtuous woman. So, I didn't want to just present another item that will collect dust; this time, I was determined to do something that will really make her day special by presenting her a gift that will last a lifetime."

The private school, we heard, will have teachers from London. It will not only be a school with the best standards, it is also going to be the cheapest in the history of standard private schools in Nigeria as Apostle Suleman announced to the gathering that students will be paying just N20,000 (twenty thousand naira) as learning fee.

Not only that, the famous preacher said the running of the school and salaries of the foreign teachers will be his sole responsibility.

While appreciating God for the honour of the day, Dr. Lizzy Suleman who is fondly addressed as 'OFM First Lady', used the opportunity of the occasion to bless many people with cash and material gifts. Among the gifts were three cars worth millions of naira each, and various other items.

Apostle Suleman owns about eight viable private business concerns which are diligently run by the wife whenever he is away on apostolic missions.

PDP Wins Rivers State Legislative Re-Run

The Peoples Democratic Party has won the supplementary rerun election held in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The party, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission, won the Federal House of Representatives seat and the State House of Assembly seat that were in contention.

Returning Officer for the Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency election, Professor Shola Omotola, announced on Sunday that the All Progressives Congress got 6,220 votes while the PDP polled 15,221 votes.

With the declaration of the result, Jerome Eke of the PDP defeated his closed rival, Ogbonna Nwuke of the APC

However, the Returning Officer for the Etche State Constituency 2 election, Oluwatosin Odusanya announced that the PDP scored 4,162 votes to defeat the APC, which polled 1,618 votes.

Based on the result announced, Tony Ejiogu of the PDP won his challenger, Golden Chioma of the APC.

But the State Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, condemned the act of trying to subvert the will of the people through INEC result manipulation with the support of security agents.

The governor said Rivers people would continue to resist fraudulent attempts to manipulate election results.

He declared that elections could only be won at the polling units and not through the swapping of result sheets by security agencies and INEC.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission has announced the release of its employee who was kidnapped by suspected political thugs during Saturday’s supplementary rerun election in Etche, Rivers State.

INEC in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer in Rivers State, Tonia Nwobi, denied that one of its staff lost a hand to the violence that erupted in some parts of Etche during the election.

The commission added that as of the time of issuing the statement, all 745 employees mobilised from Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States had returned to the collation centre.

SEC Seals Up Yuan Dong Over Alleged Ponzi Scheme

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says it has sealed up the premises of Yuan Dong (YDEC) for unacceptable investment operations in the country.

The head of Corporate Communications of the SEC, Naif Abdussalam, in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, said the closure was to end unlawful activities of the company against unsuspecting investors.

“Investments in the scheme range from a minimum deposit of N10,000 to a maximum deposit of N240,000.

“The investment period of the scheme is pegged at a minimum of 30 working days to a maximum period of 10 months with offer of interest rates on short and medium term basis. “The company promises a daily profit of N80 and N2,400 depending on the category of investment,” he said.

Abdussalam said the commission’s investigations showed that the company also enticed its customers with payment of bonuses should they convince more investors to invest in the scheme.

He said that the commission had established that the company’s activities also constituted a breach of the Investment and Securities Act (ISA), 2007.

“Furthermore it was discovered that contrary to their supposed existence in over 20 locations across the country, the company only has functional offices in Asaba, Kano and Abuja.

“The promoters of these illegal operations have been arrested by the Nigeria Police Force and are undergoing interrogation.

“The Commission wishes to notify the investing public that the company is not licensed to carry out investments business of any type and as such its operations are illegal,” he said.

Abdussalam advised the public to exercise due diligence and caution in the course of making investment decisions. He said valid licence of lawful operators could be obtained on the commission’s website by members of the public to confirm the licences of firms they intend to carry investment activities with.

This was announced in a statement signed on behalf of the DSS by Tony Opuiyo.

According to the statement, the items were found on 25 February following the execution of a search warrant at a property located at 44 Aguiyi Ironsi Way, Maitama, Abuja. The property is occupied by a company named Dunes Investment and Global Properties Limited.

The DSS stated that a search on the property followed the receipt of intelligence that some incriminating items were stashed in the boots of cars at the premises, particularly a Mercedes Benz S550 (BWR 135AH) and Maserati 4.7 (BWR 207 AJ), which were subsequently confiscated.

Items recovered, the service revealed, included a Glock pistol with two magazines and a total of 29 rounds of ammunition, a mini-Uzi gun with two magazines containing 10 rounds and four rounds respectively, 42 extra rounds of ammunition, and one AK-47 rifle.

Also recovered were 21 certificates of occupancy and one offer of statutory right of occupancy as well as 45 keys to various exotic cars.

The discovery of the items, explained the DSS, provoked further investigation. The DSS subsequently invited Mr. Suswam for interrogation.

The DSS warned that it would not tolerate any form of lawlessness from individuals and groups.

"In line with its statutory mandate of maintaining the peace and internal security of the country, the Service at this moment restates its commitment to go after anyone, no matter how highly placed, who engages in acts capable of causing the breach of peace in the country," the DSS said in its statement.

What causes 'new car smell'?

There is nothing like new car smell. You probably wouldn't call it a fresh smell, but it's definitely an unused smell. No one else's funk has permeated the car; it's a blank slate for you and your very own funk. It smells like money — maybe like your first real job, or a graduation present, or a reward for your retirement. It might smell a bit like leather if you're fancy, or it might smell more like vinyl (before the kids have spilled who-knows-what on its easy-to-clean surface). Either way, it smells like you made a decision and committed the cash to paying for it over the next few years.

All of this is lovely, but what actually is new car smell? The truth is it's a far less romantic, yet still heady, mix of 50 to 60 volatile organic compounds, or VOCs,off-gassing in your car. (These are the same compounds that cause a greasy film to form on your car's windshield.) At new-car concentrations, these chemicals are not terribly dangerous, but they're not exactly aromatherapy, either. They do break down quickly, to the tune of about 20 percent decay every week, so the smell doesn't linger all that long. That's why we call it new-car smell, not car-I've-had-for-five-years smell.

As much as we love new-car smell, auto manufacturers are working to eliminate it. Not that they don't like the smell, but they'd rather not use the chemicals involved in the smell if they can help it. Automotive materials that include fewer VOCs, like soy-based foam seats cushions, don't off-gas quite so much, and they don't really have a smell. In fact, there may come a time when new-car smell is only available in a bottle. And if you're into that kind of thing, rest easy knowing that fragrance manufacturers aren't bottling up semi-dangerous VOCs. They're faking it, which is probably a good thing. That's the easy answer to the question.

Jay Z Becomes First Rapper Inducted Into Songwriters Hall Of Fame

Jay Z has topped iconic rappers like Eminem et al to become the fist rapper to be inducted into the songwriters hall of fame

By breaking this record, Jay Z has given other rappers hope of someday becoming inductees.
The Songwriters Hall announced on Wednesday Feb. 22nd that Jay Z will be inducted into the Hall at the organization’s 48th Annual Induction and Awards Dinner scheduled for June 15 in New York.

Songwriters are eligible 20 years after they were first published.

Jay Z’s first album, Reasonable Doubt, came out in
1996, the same year that fellow superstar rapper, Eminem, released his first album, so the two are both eligible with Jay Z getting the nod this year.

(There are, of course, other pioneering rappers who came long before Jay Z or Eminem, like Grand master Flash or the Beastie Boys...).

Drake Gives Rihanna A Birthday Shout-Out,While Jennifer Lopez Gets Grilled About The Singer

Drake and Rihanna may not have worked out in the romance department (yet, at least), but the Canadian singer still has “a lot of love” for his ex-girlfriend and frequent collaborator.
During Drizzy’s concert in Dublin on Monday, he gave RiRi a special shout-out on her birthday.

“It’s somebody’s birthday today — somebody I have a lot of love for and a lot of respect for,” he told the crowd about Rihanna, who turned 29. “So instead of singing ‘Happy Birthday,’ though, we just going to do this. We just going to do this in Dublin tonight. Instead of singing ‘Happy Birthday,’ we gonna set it off just like this. Run it!”.

Drake, 30, then performed a medley of their three hits, “Work,” “Take Care,” and “Too Good.” Naturally, the crowd went wild.

Rihanna and Drake rekindled their on-again, off-again relationship last year, but called it quits in October. Two months later, the “One Song” crooner cozied up to Jennifer Lopez.

Lopez, 47, continued to dodge questions about her relationship with Drake on Tuesday’s The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Ellen asked J.Lo who she spent Valentine’s Day with before flashing a cozy photo of the singer with Drake.

“He’s off on tour right now,” the Shades of Blue actress smiled.
“But you were songwriting with him, right, ‘songwriting’?” Ellen quipped.

“We did a song together, if that’s what you’re ‘asking,’” Lopez said before referencing the above Instagram photo. “We weren’t writing a song right at that moment. … We were just hanging out.”

Maybe that explanation is enough for Rihanna to follow Lopez on Instagram again.

Do black cars really get hot in summer?

Did you know the state of California once considered banning the sale of new black cars?Obviously, the same principle that help you make smart clothing choices can help keep your car cool, too (and help the environment, while you're at it).

It's common knowledge that dark colors absorb heat (especially that from the sun's rays) while light colors reflect it. So in 2008 and 2009, the state of California considered banning the sale of new black cars, not out of concern for California residents' on-the-go comfort, but because of the unfavorable environmental effects. It sounded like a bunch of hippie nonsense (and it even got some conservatives, such as Rush Limbaugh, all worked up), but the science behind the idea is sound. A 2011 study by the Berkeley Lab Environmental Energy Technologies Division discovered that white, silver, and other light paint colors do improve a car's efficiency. The study, which pitted a silver Honda Civic against a black one, found that light colored cars reflect about 60 percent of sunlight compared to dark colored cars. This translates to a 2 percent decrease in fuel economy (due to increased air conditioner use), a 1.9 percent increase in carbon dioxide emissions, and a 1 percent increase in other harmful emissions for a black car

Why Scientists think aliens are likely huge

This video game publicity image released by 2K Games shows extraterrestrial invaders in "XCOM: Enemy Unknown."

If you're traveling to distant planets anytime soon, you might think twice about raising a ruckus: The inhabitants likely weigh an average of 650 pounds, a cosmologist says.

Apparently it all comes down to planet size and the conservation of energy, CNET reports. "Throughout the animal kingdom, species which are physically larger invariably possess a lower population density, possibly due to their enhanced energy demands," says Fergus Simpson of the University of Barcelona.

That's quite true on Earth, where we have seven billion (relatively big) people, and, the BBC noted last year, up to 100 trillion (tiny) ants.

Which brings us to outer space, where, Simpson says, "most inhabited planets are likely to be closer in size to Mars than the Earth." And "since population density is widely observed to decline with increasing body mass, we conclude that most intelligent species are expected to exceed 300kg (660lbs)," he adds.

A scientist in Scotland says Simpson's "average size calculation is reasonable," but doesn't account for gravitational pull—and planets with stronger gravity would probably have smaller animals, Newsweek reports.

SETI Institute researcher Seth Shostak says Simpson's paper, published at arXiv.org, also leaves out evolutionary theory: With humans, for example, it's our ability to walk upright and use opposable thumbs that gave us the upper hand on Earth.

"Polar bears are large but do not write great literature and build radio towers," he says, "and a lot of that is probably because they are walking around on all fours." (See which moon is the top contender for life outside Earth.)

Why you might have to start wrapping up your keys in aluminum foil

Photo illustration.

Your car is always listening. Not for your voice, like the Amazon Echo or Siri, but for an electronic signal, such as the coded "unlock" signal from your electronic key fob. If it's a newer car model, you might not have to press any buttons; just approach your car and the doors will unlock automatically. In some cars, the engine will even turn on.

Wirelessly unlocking your car is convenient, but it comes at a price. Criminals can easily intercept the key fob's signal and open your car without setting off any alarms. If you have a true keyless car model, they might be able to just drive away. Let's look at how criminals pull this off and what you can do to keep your car safe.

How your car's security system works

As you've probably noticed, you can't just open your car with any old radio signal. You need your specific key fob to do the job, and there's a reason.

A key fob uses a computer chip to create a unique code that it sends to your car's security system. The car also has a chip that uses the same algorithm to generate codes. If the codes match up, the car opens. There's a bit more to it, but those are the basics.

How criminals attack #1

Since each key fob/car security pair is unique, and each one can create billions of codes, hackers shouldn’t stand a chance. But it turns out that a popular system from Megamos Crypto isn't as secure everyone thought.

Researchers at Radboud University in the Netherlands and the University of Birmingham found that by intercepting the wireless signal just twice, they could narrow down the possible combinations from billions to just 200,000. After that, a computer can figure out the code in just half an hour and unlock the car.

In a real-world application, a thief could sit on a street and gather wireless signals as car owners enter and exit their vehicles. Then overnight they could steal a number of cars. Click here to find out if your car is at risk from this kind of attack.

Still, it takes a skilled car thief or hacker to carry out this kind of attack, so the odds of it happening to you are slim. But thanks to always-on key fobs, there's another risk that's much more likely to happen

How criminals attack #2

Always-on key fobs present a serious weakness in your car's security. As long as your keys are in range, anyone can open the car and the system will think it's you. That's why newer car models won't unlock until the key fob is within a foot of them.

But for less than $100, criminals can get an amplifier that detects key fob signals from up to 300 feet away and then transmits them to your car. In other words, your keys could be in your house, and criminals could walk up to your car and open it. This isn't just a theory; it's actually happening.

Steps to stop car thieves

Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can take to keep hackers from stealing your signal. You can buy a signal-blocking pouch that can hold your keys, like the Hack-Blocking Card Pouch.

If you don’t want to spend any money, you can stick your key fob into the refrigerator or freezer. The multiple layers of metal will block your key fob's signal. Just check with the fob's manufacturer to make sure that freezing your key fob won't damage it.

If you're not hot on freezing your key fob, you can do the same thing with your microwave oven. (Hint: Don't turn it on.) Stick your key fob in there, and criminals won't be able to pick up its signal. Like any seasoned criminal, they'll just move onto an easier target.

Since your key fob's signal is blocked by metal, you can also wrap it up in aluminum foil. While that's the easiest solution, it can also leak the signal if you don't do it right. Plus, you might need to stock up on foil. You can also make a foil-lined box to put your keys in, if you're in a crafting mood.

You should also be aware that this kind of signal stealing isn't a problem just for car key fobs. Newer passports and other I.D. cards contain radio frequency identification chips that enable criminals to use a high-powered RFID reader to steal your information from a distance. You don't need aluminum foil, however. Explore the line of stylish RFID-blocking wallets, purses and passport cases.

Key fob hacking isn't the only danger to modern cars. Learn how hackers can take control of cars through their entertainment systems and other avenues of attack.
