Women from Yeghe, Rivers State protest harrassment and arrest of their paramount ruler by the Nigerian Army

A group of women from Yeghe Community gathered Wednesday, May 25, to protest the harrassment and arrest of their paramount ruler, HRH Barinadaa Gbaranee by soldiers.
According to Thisday, soldiers from the 2 Brigade Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, stationed in Bori, on Monday arrested the monarch (pictured) after his house vandalized.

Yeghe Community, in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State has been a hot-bed of army operations since the army invaded the community in February in search of former agitator, Solomon Ndigbara, whom the military has since declared wanted.

The Assistant Director Army Public Relations, 2 Brigade Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Capt. Eli Lazarus, confirmed the arrest of the traditional ruler but however, sad the army “invited” Gbaranee for questioning concerning an investigation it was carrying out.

A text message from Lazarus, said: The paramount ruler of Yeghe Community, Barinadaa Gbaranee was invited by 2 Brigade Nigerian Army in connection with an on-going investigation that relates to security within his domain. I assure you that he will return to his ccommunity as soon as investigation is completed.

Read President Muhammadu Buhari’s Children’s Day Message to the Nation

I heartily greet and felicitate with all Nigerian children on the occasion of this year’s Children’s Day celebration. I seize the opportunity of this year’s celebration which comes just two days before the first anniversary of the present Administration, to reassure our children and youth that we remain fully committed to fulfilling our promise of a better Nigeria for all of our people.

On this happy occasion for our children, I reaffirm my belief that it is the right of every Nigerian child to have access to quality and affordable education, as well as healthcare and other basic necessities for a good life, in a peaceful and secure environment.

The good health and well-being of Nigerian children remain a top priority on our agenda for national development and we have demonstrated our strong commitment in this regard with the allocation of N12.6 billion in the 2016 budget for vaccines and programmes to prevent childhood killer diseases such as polio, measles and yellow fever.

Other measures in the 2016 budget, such as the school feeding programme for children at a cost of N93.1 billion, will ensure that more children go to school and enjoy the fun of learning and growing together with their peers.

Despite the current economic and funding challenges facing our dear nation, my administration will continue to do all within its powers to achieve better living conditions and greater access to quality healthcare and education for all our youth. It is a thing of joy that on this year’s Children’s Day, we can also celebrate the safe return of one of the Chibok girls, Amina Ali Nkeki and many other abducted women and children who have been freed from the clutches of Boko Haram by our gallant troops.

I assure all Nigerians and friends of the country, once again, that my administration will not rest on its oars until the ungodly terrorist sect is totally eliminated from our country.

As peace gradually returns to the insurgency-ravaged North-Eastern States, the Federal Government will continue to work diligently to ensure the rapid and full reintegration and rehabilitation of all internally displaced persons, including orphaned children in the region.

We will also sustain and strengthen ongoing actions to protect children more effectively from violence, child-labour, child-trafficking, forced marriages and other related offences.

In return, I urge you all to imbibe and exhibit in greater measure, the virtues of hard work, diligence, discipline, honesty, prudence, selflessness and patriotism which are essential for the actualisation of our vision of a truly great nation.

The world now looks up to our dear nation, Nigeria as an exemplary model of democratic ideals after the smooth transition that brought our Administration to power.

You, our children and youth have a very significant role to play in ensuring that our democratic institutions of governance are continuously nurtured, improved and strengthened to underpin national development and prosperity.

Remain assured that under my leadership, the Federal Government will continue to do its best to prepare and equip you to show the world that with its brilliant, resourceful and resilient people, Nigeria is a country of incredible potential and opportunity.

We have secured 140 convictions, recovered billions of dollars in just six months- EFCC boss says

Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, says the anti-graft agency has been able to secured over 140 convictions and recovered billions of dollars in stolen funds. ‎According to a statement signed by EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren and released yesterday May 26th, Magu disclosed this at a rally organised by the EFCC to sensitise Nigerian schoolchildren and teenagers on the perils of corruption to national development.

‘‘In just six months of this year, we have secured over 140 convictions, including some elusive ‘high profile’ criminals. House of Reps passes 19 critical Bills in one sitting

In continuation of its resolve to improve on the quality of bills and reduce the time frame within which they are passed, the House of Representatives on Thursday passed 19 bills.

The bills, which, however, require concurrence of the senate and presidential assent to be made laws, cover serious areas of concentration of the present administration including anti-corruption, national minimum wage, strengthening of small and medium businesses, manufacturing sector, among others.

It will be recalled that the House only recently passed 130 bills through first reading on the same day. Many of those bills, it will be noted, have scaled through further legislative processes.

Some of the bills that were passed on Thursday include the bill for an Act to amend the Advance Fee Fraud and other related offences act, a bill for an Act to Amend the Dangerous Drugs Act, a Bill for an Act to amend the Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme Fund Act and a bill for an Act to amend the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act to modify the definition of Bank and Money Instrument, review the composition of the commission and harmonize the tenure of offices of members.

Also passed were a bill for an Act to Establish the National Child Protection and Enforcement Agency, a bill to Amend the provisions of the Small and Medium Scale Enterprises Development Agency Act and a bill for an Act to Amend the Value Added Tax Act to review upwards the fines and penalties specified for offences under Act.

Another very relevant bill that was passed by the House is that of an Act to Regulate the Rights and Obligations under Tenancy Agreements and the relationship between the landlord and the tenant, including the procedure for recovery of premises in the Federal Capital Territory and other related matters.

Metuh's Family Say He Is Ready To Refund N400m

The family of the immediate past National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Olisa Metuh, has said that their son is ready to refund the N400m he allegedly collected from the office of the former National Security Adviser, Lt.Col. Sabo Dasuki (retd).

Chief Gilbert Metuh, who issued the statement on behalf of the Metuh family, said his brother’s life was in danger because of his alleged spinal cord injury.

He said that the family was aware that the matter regarding their son was subjudice, but said the family was only reacting to issues that were in public glare.

Gilbert Metuh said, “Since his (Metuh’s) arrest and even up to about a week ago, our son has made several overtures to the arresting authority for him to refund the money since they now claim in court that it came from government coffers. All efforts have been unsuccessful.

“It is instructive that out of over 300 names listed as having received money from the ONSA, all those who offered to refund money were not arraigned in court.

“Our son is the only one whose offer to refund money was rejected and has been arraigned in court and his case given accelerated hearing. On each trial date the hostility in the courtroom is palpable.

Metuh is currently being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission for allegedly receiving the money, which the prosecution said was from government pulse.

But the accused has consistently said he was not aware that the money came from the government coffers.

The money was said to have been released to him to launder the alleged bad image of the former President some months to the 2015 presidential election which Jonathan eventually lost.

Metuh had lost in his bid to quash the charge as both the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja and the Court of Appeal said he had a case to answer on the issue.He had also lost at the High Court in his bid to secure his passport to enable him travel abroad to seek medical treatment of his alleged illness.

Ondo Police rescues two kidnapped Reverend sisters

Two Reverend Sisters kidnapped along the Benin-Ijebu Ode Expressway at Kajola village in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State was on Sunday morning rescued by the police.

The duo, Apo Perpetual and Roseline Familade, with their driver Zwugwa Zibai were abducted on May 15, when they were traveling to Ogun State for a programme.

They spent one week in the den of kidnappers before they were rescued by a team of police in the state and men of the intelligent squad sent from Abuja by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Solomon Arase for the rescue.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Femi Joseph, who confirmed this, said the victims were hale and hearty.

He refused to give further information about how the nuns and their driver were rescued.

According to him, “all I can say for now is that the Reverend Sisters and their driver have been rescued by our men and the intelligent squad sent by the IGP from Abuja.

“We are still on the trail of the suspects and we will soon arrest them because we are presently combing the area where we rescued them.

“They quickly abandoned the kidnapped victims when they discovered that we were closer to where they hid them.

“No ransom was paid before we secured their release, but very soon, the police will arrest those kidnappers”.

Alleged arrest: Rivers APC threatens to drag PDP to court

The Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has given the State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 48 hours to retract and withdraw its statement purporting that the son of the Deputy Chairman of APC in Rivers, Peter Odike, was arrested by the Nigerian Army for killing and kidnapping.

Rivers APC in a statement issued on Sunday in Port Harcourt by its Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, described the claim as contained in a statement issued on Friday by Rivers PDP as “malicious, diabolical, disgusting and false”.

“We wish to state, after due confirmation from all the security organs in Rivers State including the Army, that no son of Prince Peter Odike, the Rivers State APC Deputy Chairman, was arrested for any crime,” Dr. Ikanya said.

According to him, “This latest antics is one of the ploys by the PDP leadership in Rivers State to continue to hoodwink the entire nation and a shameful attempt to smear us with their established trademark of killing, assassination and kidnapping – acts that are alien to the APC leadership and members of the party in Rivers State.

“The murderous acts of PDP in Rivers State are well documented and known throughout the entire world. The utterances of Chief Nyesome Wike, the PDP leader in Rivers State, at various fora have led to the death of many officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security organs and innocent members of APC. Today, under the watch of Gov Nyesom Wike over 500 innocent souls of Rivers State have met their untimely death and Rivers State is now known as the killing field courtesy of the PDP leadership in the state. INEC cannot conclude the National and State Assembly elections in the State due to the murderous nature of the PDP Leadership in Rivers State”

Rivers APC said it is not its intention to join words “with a group of demented and debased minds,” warning that “If after 48 hours, Rivers PDP fails to retract this baseless allegation, we may be left with no other option than to sue both the so called Rev. Jerry Needam, who signed the statement, and his Brother Felix Obuah, the Rivers PDP Chairman, to explain the source of this satanic allegation intended to demonise and tarnish the good image of our great party and its peace-loving leaders.”

NLC Protesters this afternoon forced their way into the Lagos state government secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja to harass and disturb government workers who are not participating in the ongoing strike action.

Government Explains That Releasing Dasuki Poses A Threat To National Security

The Federal Government on Thursday said the embattled former National Security Adviser, NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd) was still being held in custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, because he poses great threat to national security.

Federal Government’s lawyer, T.D. Kabiru made the explanation while arguing against the release of the former NSA at the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, court, Abuja.

Kabiru alleged that the amount of illegal weapons recovered from Dasuki’s Abuja home and the intelligence report at the disposal of the nation’s security agencies has it that more arms and ammunitions have not being recovered, this he said justified Dasuki’s continued detention.

The embattled former NSA had dragged the Federal Government before the court, challenging his continued detention by the DSS despite being granted bail by several courts.

But Kabiru in his argument said, “The position of the defence, which is not controverted by the applicant, is that the arms and ammunition recovered during the search is not the only arms and ammunition in the possession of the applicant.

“There is fear that he has more. There is intelligence report that some are yet to be recovered. That we fear he has more is a ground to hold him. There are on-going investigations which are revealing fresh facts concerning him.

“The right of an individual cannot supersede the security of a country when there is intelligence report to suspect the conduct of the individual. The applicant did not deny that these guns were recovered from his house.

“By Section 3 of the Firearms Act, CAP F28 LFN 2004, Part One of the Schedule thereof prescribes the arms that cannot be licensed for individual’s possession. The arms found in his house fall into this category of prohibited arms.

“Since they were illegally kept by the applicant, the deduction is that they were kept for illegal purposes. The Federal Republic of Nigeria has justified, with the evidence it has placed before the court, the detention of the applicant on ground of his own safety, and for the safety of other Nigerians by virtue of the security report received by the DSS.”

Buhari promises to take care of rescued Chibok girl, Amina Ali

The presidency has promised to take care of the rescued Chibok girl, Amina Ali.

President Muhammadu Buhari made this pledge when he received the girl, who was rescued in Borno State on Wednesday by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, at the Presidential Villa.

Buhari said like all Nigerians and many others all over the world, he was happy that the young lady was back alive.

He, however, said his feelings were tinged with deep sadness because of the horrors the girl had to go through at such an early stage in her life.

He said that nobody in Nigeria should be put through the brutality of forced marriage, adding that every girl has a right to education and their choice of life.

He said, “Amina will get the best care that the Nigerian government can afford. We will ensure that she gets the best medical, emotional and whatever care that she requires to get full recovery and be integrated into the society‎.

“Yesterday (Wednesday), medical personnel from government and other NGOs examined her for a total of about five hours. Trauma experts from UNICEF also met her.

“The Federal Government will assist the Murtala Mohammed Foundation which has already been providing support for the families of the missing Chibok girls and which runs a truama and counseling faciity in Kano, will also be involved in the ongoing work with Amina in monitoring her progress and any additional support she requires.

“The continuation of Amina’s education so abruptly disrupted will definitely be a propriety of the Federal Government.

“Amina must be able go back to school. Nobody in Nigeria should be put through the brutality of forced marriage, every girl has a right to education and their choice of life.”

PDP will return to power at federal level by 2019 – Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has once again expressed hope that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will regain its lost glory at the federal level in 2019.

PDP, which was hitherto referred to as the largest party in Africa, was defeated in the 2015 presidential election by the All Progressives Congress, APC, after 16 years in power.

Addressing delegates of the PDP at the Rivers State Congress of the party at the Obi Wali Cultural Centre in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, Governor Wike said the reorganisation of the party will place it on a sound position to attain victory in 2019.

He said: “The PDP will return to the seat of power at the Federal level by 2019. This congress is part of the process of repositioning the party.”

The governor assured the people of Rivers State that the party will continue to deliver on all fronts in line with the pledges contained in the New Rivers Development Blueprint.

He added, “This administration will showcase our superlative performance in the last one year between May 23 and May 29. The people will know firsthand the quality projects we have executed.”
