Sharia police begins prosecution of adulterous women‎ in Kano

The Faggae outpost of the Kano State Hisbah Board (Sharia Police) on Monday said it had commenced the prosecution of 11 women for allegedly engaging in social vices.

Malam Salisu Umar, the Commander, Special Services of the board, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano that the suspects were apprehended around the Sabongari area in the metropolis.

He said they were arrested during a special patrol conducted by the Fagge local government office of the Board.

Umar said the suspects were found drinking alcohol, smoking cannabis and romancing with men other than their husbands or close relations, which was contrary to the Sharia legal system.

He said the state had been practicing the Islamic legal code that prohibits such illicit attitudes, stressing that the board would intensify its efforts to patrol identified flash points.

“The suspects are females between the ages of 21 and 24 and were apprehended around midnight at beer parlours in Faringida and Abedie Road in Sabongari,’’ Umar said.

“We have brought them before a competent Sharia court for prosecution,” he added.

Umar explained that the suspects were screened and taken to court and they were now awaiting trial at the Central Prisons, Kano, as their case was adjourned till Nov. 14th, 2016.

He said the board would not condone any act of immorality, stressing that it would arrest and prosecute whoever engages in such vices.

Umar noted that four out of the suspects were divorcees with kids, while one of them was carrying a three-month-old pregnancy.

ARMSGATE - Dasuki To Call Jonathan As Witness

Former National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki, who is on trial for alleged mismanagement of $2.1billion arms funds, would like former President Goodluck Jonathan to be his witness, it was learnt yesterday.

Dr. Jonathan has faulted the charges against Dasuki, claiming that the ex-NSA could not have stolen about $2.2billion votes for arms. “We bought warships, we bought aircraft, we bought lots of weapons for the army,” he said in a recent interview at the Oxford Union in the United Kingdom.

Speaking with our correspondent, Mr. Ahmed Raji (SAN), the ex-NSA’s counsel, said Dasuki wanted Jonathan to testify in court.

Raji said: “It will be desirable for Jonathan to testify for the ex-NSA. It will throw greater light into grey areas. And it will serve the interest of Justice.

“It will be fantastic for him to go to court to testify. Dasuki is an agent of a disclosed and known principal.”

Another member of the legal team said: “With what Jonathan said in London, the only logical thing for him to do is to see it through.

“We want Jonathan to follow-through. If he backs out, it will be bad.”

But, in Raji’s view, a political solution will be better than trial because of the “characters involved”.

He said: “But, frankly speaking, I pray for a political solution to the problem because of the characters involved.

“Both the accused and the government should embrace a political solution to the problem.”

Asked if Dasuki is ready for political solution, he added: “Why not? He is.

”I believe the President is very sincere. He wants to reorganise Nigeria and he deserves the support of all.

“With a political solution, Mr. President will be in good stead to overcome unnecessary distractions in order to succeed.

“I pray that everybody will key into his vision and the economic challenges facing the nation.”

Those point of advising a political solution is that it will not be “tidy” for Dasuki to mention all those who got money from his office. Among them, said a source, are a prominent traditional ruler in the North, who reportedly got N500 million and a former Head of State.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said Dasuki’s defence team was banking on Jonathan’s testimony.

The source said: “All is set for the defence of Dasuki, who is still insisting on an open trial to let Nigerians know the beneficiaries of the arms cash.

“One of those who may testify is ex-President Goodluck Jonathan whose remarks in London appeared to be the first phase of the war chest of the ex-NSA.

“You know the ex-NSA said he acted on Jonathan’s instructions in disbursing some of the cash. And from the look of things, the ex-President is now ready to accept responsibility for whatever Dasuki did.

“We believe it has reached a level that Nigerians must know what really happened, how funds were disbursed and who got what.

“This is why a secret trial is not a viable option, with the way things are going.”

The source added: “So far, we have secured the consent of Jonathan to appear in court for Dasuki. This will make the trial worth it.”

It was learnt that a traditional ruler allegedly benefitted from the arms funds to the tune of about N500million.

Another source added: “Dasuki has a list of highly-placed beneficiaries from the arms cash. A particular traditional ruler got about N500million as a gift from the government through the Office of the National Security Adviser(ONSA). There are many hidden beneficiaries whom Nigerians must know.

“Nigerians will be shocked by some revelations which will come up during the trial. Nothing short of open trial will let Nigerians know the truth. We are ready for this.”

Dasuki had on December 13, 2015 said he disbursed the funds on Jonathan’s instructions.

The ex-NSA said: “I wish to state as follows: That I have been publicly indicted and any statement may jeopardise my defence. Having been briefed by the EFCC investigators on why I was invited, I will answer the charges in court. As such, I do not wish to make any further statement on the matter.

“That I am aware in November (I cannot remember the exact date), my office requested the CBN to exchange N10billion from the account of the Office of National Security Adviser domiciled in CBN. The money was exchanged at $47m and some Euros which I cannot remember. The exact amount was delivered at my residence.

“The money was for delegates that attended the nomination convention for the PDP. Presidential nomination. The money was paid and sent to Hon. (Waripamowei) Dudafa (SSAP Household) and ADC(C-I-C) for distribution on the instruction of the President.

“Based on the statement of Director of Finance and Administration (Salisu), Ibrahim Wambai, and Yazidu Ibrahim, all the cash (both foreign and local) are usually given to them for official use.

“I also noted the statement of Sagir Bafarawa whose company is Dalhatu Investment in which he stated that he received the sum of N4,633,000,000 from the account of the Office of the NSA. I authorised the payment . The money was for vehicles, motorcycles for youth empowerment and women sent to Saudi Arabia. I got the proposal from the President. I do not have the proposal; it should be at the office in the Villa.”

Robbers Attack Delta Bank with Dynamite, Cart Off N25m

DARE-devil robbers, weekend, attacked an Ughelli branch of Union Bank, and carted away N25 million after blowing up the bank’s vault with dynamite.

It was gathered that the hoodlums, who were dressed in army camouflage, used dynamite and welding tools to break into the ATM inside the bank and the bank’s vault, where a bulk of the cash was kept.


An auditor of the bank, who was sent from the Benin regional office for the regular auditing of the bank’s branch, estimated that about N25 million was stolen from the bank.

Confirming the incident yesterday, a staff of the bank, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the bank’s manager and some senior staff were arrested and taken to Asaba for questioning in connection with the incident.

Giving details of the incident, the staff said: “The security guards were tied up while the operation lasted.

“Though they spared the ATM outside the bank premises, they used dynamite to blow up the ATM inside the bank and drilled their way through into the bank’s vault.”

Ondo election: INEC, APC committed daylight robbery – PDP Governors

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be fair in the conduct of forthcoming Ondo governorship election.

The forum said this in reaction to the release of list of governorship candidates for the November 26 election.

A statement by its Secretary, Patrick Okon, on Monday in Abuja, also called for overhaul of the commission.

It alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC), with the help of INEC, was planning to rig the poll.

“We are aware of the plan of APC to get Ondo State by all means, including enlisting the assistance of INEC.

“We are warning that we will not fold our arms to watch this impunity and day-time robbery.

“INEC is an umpire and should play its role very well so that the electorate will have confidence in it.

“From the way things are going, the people are already losing confidence in the commission,’’ it said.

The forum also called on INEC to stick to its electoral mandate and not to subvert the law of the land.

“INEC should conduct itself very well in this forthcoming Ondo state governorship election to avoid a repeat of what happened in Edo election”, they stated.

Fulani herdsmen raid Niger village, kill five

Some heavily armed Fulani herdsmen on Monday killed five persons in Gbada community in Kaure, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

It was gathered that the attack was carried out at about 3a.m and that several villagers were also injured, while others are still missing.

The gunmen, numbering over 30, reportedly invaded the community at about 3a.m when the villagers were deep asleep. Several cows were also said to have been stolen.

Gbada and environs situated on the border with neighbouring Kaduna State have come under attacks in recent times by rustlers.

The senator representing Niger East, Senator David Umaru, has condemned the attack, describing it as “barbaric and heinous,” while calling on security agencies to bring the perpetrators to book.

Umaru told Punch that he got a call from some members of the community informing him of the invasion of the rustlers and he promptly alerted the Police command in the state.

The Chairman of Shiroro LGA, Hon Hassan Jagaba, who confirmed the attack to journalists described the onslaught as “inhuman and devastating.”

“On the receipt of information of the invasion, I had to alert the Police at Zumba division, who mobilised their men to the affected community but the attackers had fled with the cattle they rustled before the Police got there,” Jagaba explained.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the state Police command, DSP Bala Elkana, also confirmed the report, saying that the invaders fled to the neighbouring Kaduna State.

He said the anti-cattle rustling team was combing the forest through which the fleeing rustlers were believed to have escaped.

He said that no arrest had been made so far.

My wife traveled to Ado Ekiti to see my friend and brother Governor Fayose and his family. They were on their way out of town when they went to Access Bank in Ado Ekiti to get some money. When they got there my 8 month old son Aragorn and wife Precious Chikwendu were illegally detained, brutalised and put under arrest on the orders of the EFCC at a bank in Ado Ekiti today.

She has never had any business with me, she has never been formally invited by the EFCC or asked any questions about her transactions and neither have they written to her on any issue even though they are always sending letters to my house and sending people there.

If Buhari wants to deal with me why doesnt he face me like a man obstead of trying to harm and hurt my 8 month old son and wife. Had it not been for the intervention of Governor Ayo Fayose they would have been taken them away and subjected them to all manner of harm and indignities simply because she is married to me. This was an account that has 200,000 naira in it and that has never had more than 500,000. She has operated it since 2005 and she stopped using it in 2013. The account has no connection with me and I did not know it existed till today.

In an attempt to starve and harass me and my family all my accounts and wifes accounts have been frozen. Now they are resorting to arresting peoples wives and children for no just cause. I thank God for Gov. Fayose and the people of Ado Ekiti who stormed the bank and freed my wife from this illegal detention and attempt to kidnap them. Had it not been for the governors intervention and prescence the bank would have been burnt down by the crowd. My family have since left Ekiti state.

This is Buhari's Nigeria and we will resist his wickedness and tyranny. We intend to sue the bank and to sue the EFCC for this illegal and wicked action. They have no right to do this. If they want to see my wife all they need to do is to invite her. We have nothing to fear. They do not need to be so primitive and barbaric to people.

Obanikoro drilled by EFCC agents

Former Minister of Defence, (State), Musiliu Obanikoro today, October 17th, reported at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja. Obanikoro is being investigated over his alleged involvement in the misappropriation of $2.1 billion meant for the procurement of arms for which former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki is being prosecuted by the Federal Government.

The former minister as at this evening was still at the Commission's office telling the operatives of the Commission his involvement in the armsgate.

Femi Otedola Reportedly No Longer A Billionaire

Oil tycoon’s fortune plunges to $550 million from $1.8 billion...

Nigerian businessman Femi Otedola‘s net worth has plunged from $1.8 Billion to $550 Million following a massive drop in the stock price of Forte Oil, the Nigerian Stock Exchange-listed petroleum marketing company.

As at the close of trading on Friday, Forte Oil’s share price plunged to a one-year low of N145 ($0.44) per share, down from an all-time high of N342 ($1.1) in March this year when FORBES published its annual ranking of the world’s richest people.

Apart from the tumble in Forte Oil’s stock price, Otedola’s fortune has also been adversely affected by a central bank devaluation of the Naira in June. In dollar terms, the devaluation in addition to Forte’s floundering share price has knocked about $1.3 billion off the value of Otedola’s fortune which was pegged at $1.8 billion in March.

Otedola, who is Forte Oil Plc’s Chairman, is now worth only $550 million as at the close of business of Friday, according to the FORBES’ billionaires’ database.

Femi Otedola was unavailable for comments. However, an analyst at a Lagos-based Investment bank hinted that the share price drop may not be unconnected to the current recession in Nigeria that has witnessed 2 consecutive quarters of negative growth with inflation soaring to levels as high as 17%.

Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) stops banks from sacking workers

Bank workers will no longer nurse the fear of losing their jobs. Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Director, Banking Supervision, Tokunbo Martins, told reporters after the Lagos meeting, that bank workers who had been living in fears over the possibility of losing their jobs should be assured that their jobs are no longer under threat.

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has asked the management of all the commercial banks in Nigeria to halt any plans to sack some of its workers. CBN's Director, Banking Supervision, Tokunbo Martins broke the news at the Bankers’ Committee meeting held in Lagos today.

“One of the things we discussed was about the impending retrenchment in the banking industry. So, we understand that many bank staff are experiencing fears about possible retrenchment in the industry.
We discussed it among the banks and the banks are now committed to not retrenching their staff going forward. So, whatever rumours are flying around about that mass retrenchment happening or not happening, that is not true”the Nation reports

Mother Arrested For Allegedly Killing Child

The Nasarawa State Police Command on Thursday said it had arrested a woman in Gunduma, Karu Local Government Area of the state for allegedly strangling her daughter.

The state commissioner of police, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq-Bello, told journalists that the woman allegedly dumped the body of the baby in a river in the area.

Sadiq-Bello said 19 other suspects were also arrested by the police.

“As you can see, many suspects and exhibits are lined up here for you to see and inform members of the public.

“One Asabe Bawa Andrew 25 years of Gunduma was arrested for strangulating her daughter, Ester Andrew, one year and three months old and threw the dead body into a river in Gunduma.”

He said another 20-year old man in Wuse town was arrested for the murder of his friend who allegedly made him impotent through the administration of a native concoction on him.

“The command also arrested one other man in Angwan Ninzo, Keffi, for the murder of his girlfriend who was pregnant for him by pushing her into the river where she was drowned.

“He was on the run until his arrest on September 16”.

Sadiq-Bello said two Toyota Carina ll cars were recovered from suspects and a man who specialised in making fake vehicle particulars for them.

He said 20 suspects were arrested for various offences, including armed robbers and car snatchers in September.

The commissioner assured the public that police in the state would not relent on their assault against criminals.

He, however, appealed to the public to work with the police to tackle crime in the state “so that law-abiding citizens can sleep with their two eyes closed”.

Saraki, Ekweremadu Forgery Charge Withdrawn By FG

Senate President Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu have had their charge of criminal conspiracy withdrawn by the Federal Government.

A Litigation officer from the Federal Ministry of Justice, Odubu Loveme, filed an affidavit on Thursday in support of the motion.

Mr. Loveme said on September 30 in the office of the Director of Public Prosecution, a counsel to the Federal Government on the matter, Aliyu Umar(SAN), told him that he had studied the case diary and “had decided to amend the charge in the manner stated on the face of the motion paper”.

Mr. Loveme added that he has, consequently, filed an amended charge in which only Maikasuwa and Efeturi would face prosecution.

“That I depose to this affidavit in good faith believing same to be correct to the best of my knowledge and information and in accordance with the Oaths Act Cap 01 laws of the Federation of Nigeria,” he said.

The charge read: “Salisu Maikasuwa and Benedict Efeturi, on or about the 9th day of June 2015 at the National Assembly Complex, Three Arms Zone, Abuja within the jurisdiction of this honourable court agreed to do an illegal act, to wit to make the Senate Standing Orders 2015 as amended without the authority of the 7th Senate of the Federal republic of Nigeria which act was committed by yourselves and that you thereby committed the offence of criminal conspiracy.”

The two officials are accused of fraudulently amending the 2015 Senate Standing Orders without the authority of the 7th Senate “with intention that the Senators elect of the 8th Senate would believe that the said Senate Standing Orders 2015 (as amended) was made by the authority of the 7th Senate of the Federal republic of Nigeria.”

They are also accused of forging a document punishable under section 366 of the Penal Code Act (Northern States) Federal Provisions Act, 1960, Cap 345, Laws of the Federation 1990 (as amended).

The Nigerian Government also accused them of giving false information with the intention to mislead the public.

APGA Crisis: Governor Obiano May Dump Party, Join APC

The suspension of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Mr. Victor Oye, on Thursday by the National Working Committee of the party, has led to serious crack in the party.
Consequently, there were indications that the Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, might review his membership of APGA.

A member of the NWC of the party who pleaded not to be named said that plea by Obiano to stop Oye's suspension fell on deaf ears.

He told Punch: “The governor was calling us to stop the suspension, but nobody listened to him. Now what we are hearing is that the governor may join APC to realize his re-election next year. 

If that happens, you know what that means to our party. Obiano is the only governor we have in APGA”.

APGA National Working Committee had suspended Oye, for what it called gross misconduct. 

Rising from its monthly meeting in Abuja, the NWC said the suspension of the national chairman was in line with the provisions of the party’s constitution, following alleged constitutional breaches and inordinate practices of the chairman and other national officers.
